The Academy for Future Teachers: A Multitiered Recruitment and Support Program for Future Teachers of Color

Abstract

This study describes, and explores the effects of, a summer program designed to recruit and provide support for future teachers of color at a small historically Black university. Data culled from qualitative interviews, pre- and post assessments, content analysis of participants’ reflective journals, and field notes indicate that a culturally-relevant and culturally-sustaining multi-tiered approach to the recruitment and support of future Black teachers may be successfully employed to entice students of color into STEM education fields and offer clinical experiences to enhance the development of culturally relevant STEM--pedagogies.
