Understanding How Senior Student Affairs Administrators Improve Community College Campus Engagement of Male Students of Color

Abstract

This qualitative study explored how community college senior student affairs administrators’ (SSAA) described how their institution encourages male students’ of color campus engagement. These senior leaders described their challenges to improve how their complex student affairs division plans and implements policies, programs, and practices these students. We used a developmental ecology framework to examine the influence of the leaders on the environmental context. We found that these leaders recognize the importance of improving institutional awareness about male students’ of color campus engagement and redefining how their division helps these students. The findings of this study highlights the importance of the role of the community colleges’ SSAA to lead their division to improve male students of color campus engagement.
