Teacher Change in the Context of a Video-Based Professional Development Program for English Language Learners

Fri, April 28, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Grand Hyatt San Antonio, Floor: Second Floor, Mission A

Abstract

This paper is part of a larger study that investigated a three-year long professional development (PD) program involving third-grade teachers of Latino English Language Learners (ELLs) in the context of teaching mathematics. The PD activities focused on teachers’ everyday work and provided opportunities to plan and reflect on video clips of instruction with the PD facilitator on a regular basis. This paper presents findings related to one teacher’s change in her noticing and professional knowledge in her reflections of videos filmed by her Latino ELLs: change in the need to control students, taking responsibility of her own actions as a teacher and creating an engaging classroom culture. There are implications related to research in teacher education and PD facilitator strategies.
