This study examined state physical education (PE) program changes from 2001 to 2016 through analyzing the data reported in The Shape of the Nation Report: Status of Physical Education in the USA. Policies related to state mandates for PE, time/credit requirements, fitness testing and assessment requirements, adoption of state standards, and allowance of substitutions were examined over five editions of the report using repeated measures ANOVA and Friedman’s chi-square. It was discovered that a majority of these factors have not changed over the past 15 years, despite calls by numerous public health agencies for enhanced PE in schools. On a positive note, there was a significant increase in the number of states adopting standards and requiring fitness testing and assessment.
