Exploring Design-Based L2 Writing Research: Research Synthesis

Abstract

Given the potentials of design-based research (DBR) for second language (L2) writing research and pedagogy, we conducted systematic research synthesis of 21 design-based L2 writing research. Our analysis reveals that design-based L2 writing research achieved to solve the most immediate, real-world L2 writing issues, including L2 writers’ lack of reading-writing and oral-literate connections and of their motivation and confidence in L2 writing. Moreover, teachers as, or in collaboration with, researchers designed and implemented design interventions, such as introducing various writing genres to L2 learners and establishing peer communities for writing practices, in order to maximize L2 learning and advancing L2 writing theories. Based on our findings, we propose future directions of design-based L2 writing research.
