In this paper, the author illuminates how place is integral to youth media production by drawing on a year-long ethnographic study in the context of high school multimedia communications within career and technical education (CTE). The study was guided by the following research questions: In what ways can place-based media production engage students’ interests in the arts and technology, and how does place-making expand learning opportunities in CTE? Preliminary findings illustrate place and place-making as relational and contingent upon relationships of students with other students, with teachers, with peers, with family members, with technologies, and with dominant discourses. The study suggests the value of place-based media production within and beyond CTE. Implications for research and practice are also discussed.
