Upon completing a team reading of Nick Sousanis’s comics dissertation, Unflattening (2015), for the purpose of a book review, we found ourselves engaging in something larger. Reading, making and sharing analytic notes, and discussing the book catalyzed enough cognitive energy to transcend a book review. We jointly composed the review, but we did not stop there. What started as a book review shifted into a trioethography (Breault, Hackler, & Bradley, 2012) centered on the book. We used a multi-model approach to engage in dialogue together about this text because to adequately express ourselves to one another, we had to transcend words. Three findings are shared, along with the ways in which we used arts-based methods to augment our dialogue.
