Engaging in Early Literacy and Technology Practices With Immigrant Parents

Abstract

This paper presents select findings from an exploratory qualitative research study based on a project called “Project LIFE” (Literacy for Immigrant Parent Engagement). The project involved three immigrant and their children. The data included a literacy and technology survey at the start of the project and semi-structured exit interviews with the parents. The main themes that emerged from the interviews suggest that the students actively used the computers at home to engage in a variety of literacy practices; the parents reported different ways in which they implemented early literacy strategies from the workshops; and the parents cited different experiences with co-constructing a digital text with their child.
