Novice Teacher Willingness to Stay in Rural Schools: Effects of Relatedness Support and Competence Support

Sat, April 29, 8:15 to 9:45am, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 1

Abstract

Rural schools disproportionately hire first- and second-year teachers, who are substantially more likely to leave their teaching positions or even exit the profession. The specific context of rural education may exacerbate turnover conditions for novice teachers, but this topic receives little scholarly exploration. Based on self-determination theory, this paper proposes a key role played by psychological needs support, especially the needs for competence and relatedness, in novice teachers' willingness to stay at their schools.
