Supporting New Teachers Through a Unique Mission-Based Residency Program

Mon, May 1, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 1

Abstract

Teacher attrition has been a challenge that the educational world has faced for many years. The Pacific Northwest Residency Model (PNRM) is a unique residency program that uses a Three-Pillar support program to train residents placed in low socio-economic schools. This mixed-method study used a survey to analyze the retention rates and coded Reflective Exit Papers written by PNRM graduates. The study found that 88.3% of graduates were still teaching one-year and 81.34% were still teaching five-years after graduation. Impressively 92.9% of teaching graduates continued to teach in a similar school as their placement. Finally, the Three-Pillar Support program had a major impact on PNRM teachers’ decision to stay in teaching, with Academic Learning having the biggest impact.
