Engaging Learners: Faculty Members' Perceptions of Academic Experiences of Male Students of Color at Community Colleges

Sun, April 30, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 3

Abstract

As male students of color enrollment rates continues to increase at community colleges, faculty members play a critical role in ensuring these students’ academic success. However, there is scarce literature on community college faculty effective teaching practices to better support the unique academic needs of these students. To help guide this study, we utilized the Ernest Boyer’s Scholarship Reconsidered model. We found that faculty members faced challenges to understand the academic needs of these students, discussed importance of helping these students use academic support services, and the frustration of the lack of faculty member racial/ethnic diversity. These findings provide a better understanding of the importance of the scholarship of teaching to help these faculty improve these students’ academic experiences.
