Engagement and Loss of Complexity During Interactive Instruction: A Multilevel Analysis of Energy Science Classrooms

Sun, April 30, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Street Level, Stars at Night Ballroom 4

Abstract

Student engagement in post-secondary STEM education is critical for improving a variety of nationally significant learning outcomes including increased student achievement, lower rates of attrition, increased representation of underrepresented groups, and the development of twenty first century competencies. Within the context of post-secondary engineering education there is expressed need to examine the multi-level interactions between instruction, engagement, and educational outcomes to improve the quality of engineering education, a field characterized by poor quality instruction, high rates of attrition, and a lack of diversity. In the current study, we examine the multi-level interactions among interactive teaching, student engagement, and collaborative engagement and their effect on student innovation, a 21st century competency at the core of problem solving in engineering.
