Increasing Students' Growth Mindsets: The Role of the Teacher in a Digital Intervention

Thu, April 27, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 3

Abstract

This study examined the effect of a digital teaching method aimed at increasing student engagement. We investigated whether participation in a 3-week intervention program significantly increased math students’ growth mindsets over time. Students who participated in the program reported significantly higher levels of growth mindsets two months after the program ended. However, multilevel regression analyses of these changes revealed that it was not the intervention, but rather the math teachers’ growth mindsets, that were associated with the change. In light of these results, we suggest a stronger focus on the development of teacher growth mindsets rather than digital learning strategies.
