Evaluating the Building Confident Families Program: A Parenting Intervention for Low-Income Hispanic Parents

Abstract

This study examines an intervention designed to foster effective child rearing-practices among low-income Hispanic families. The program seeks to improve parenting practices by providing parents with strategies for supporting the healthy development of their children. We examined data collected at three points in time using the revised Adult-Adolescent Parenting Inventory (AAPI-2) and the Parenting Stress Index-Short Form (PSI-SF) with a sample of Hispanic parents at high risk of child abuse. The instruments focused on parenting-related attitudes, beliefs, and stress. Overall, the findings indicated that the Building Confident Families program had positive effects in these areas, many of which persisted at six months after the culmination of the intervention program.
