This study is designed to better understand how mathematics teachers’ participation in community-based professional development (PD) with a web-based assessment environment can mediate their participation in an existing online community of teacher educators (the Math Forum). This study is framed by social theories of learning and conceives of professional development as a process of engaging with boundary objects to facilitate boundary encounters. In an online professional development course, 21 practicing teachers’ began to use this tool in ways that both aligned with emergent themes in their approach to engaging mathematics and in ways that the existing online community approaches assessment. This study has implications for the design of PD tasks with boundary objects and for the design of boundary objects.
