Relationships Between Identity, Passion for Sport, and Academic Persistence, Effort, Value, and Competence Among Division I Student-Athletes

Abstract

Student-athletes may view themselves primarily as students or as athletes, or both. Using the Dualistic Model of Passion, this study explored the association between academic and athletic identity, harmonious and obsessive passion for sport, and four measures of intrinsic motivation among Division I student-athletes (N = 187) using a path analysis. Academic identity and harmonious passion were positively related to intrinsic motivation. Obsessive passion, however, was moderated by identity: (a) obsessive passion had no negative effects on academic value when athletic identity was low (academic value was the lowest when both athletic identity and obsessive passion were high); (b) obsessive passion had no negative effects on academic value and competence when academic identity was high. Educational implications are discussed.
