Black Girl, White World: Augusta Braxston Baker's Educational Trajectory and Quest to Become a Librarian

Abstract

This paper addresses the following research question: How did Augusta (Braxston) Baker, a Black children’s librarian, draw upon her community cultural wealth (CCW) to achieve her educational/occupational aims? Part One opens with information regarding her parents, upbringing, the historical significance of her childhood home, and experiences within the Baltimore Public School system. Part Two examines her post-secondary schooling experiences and journey to become a librarian. This paper concludes with an analysis of how Baker drew upon Tara J. Yosso's CCW framework to achieve her educational and occupational aims.
