A multiple case study of five public high school English teachers, this research examines how teachers who are currently using multimedia in classroom instruction are mitigating systemic barriers to implementing 21st century literacy skills. By valuing the lived experiences of their students and engaging in extensive professional learning outside of school, the teachers in these cases have forged paths to rich literacy instruction. They engage students in reading a wide variety of multimedia texts as a routine and embedded aspect of literacy instruction. Implications from this study address how content area standards and tests suppress opportunities for meaning making with multimedia texts and encourage policy changes that will better support teachers who oppose such limits.
