Abstract

Nationwide, over 400,000 children reside in foster care, yet they are less likely to obtain a college degree compared with those not exposed to foster care. Surprisingly, we have little knowledge about their experiences in higher education, both their perceived needs or personal assets. We conducted a survey of 74 former foster youth who were receiving a scholarship from the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services. Students were primarily female and had high GPA. Students were most concerned about finances. Student engagement was positively predicted GPA. Exposure to childhood physical neglect and current stress had a significant psychological impact on students. We hope these results can stimulate comprehensive strategies to support these students in higher education.
