A Father's Connection Beyond Responsibilities: Findings From a Qualitative Study on Latino Fathers

Sun, April 30, 8:15 to 9:45am, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 3

Abstract

The goal of this study was to examine cultural factors that influence Latino father’s role construct and involvement. Five fathers who self-identified as Latino completed in-depth qualitative interviews. Using a Responsible Fathering framework, qualitative analysis revealed three broad categories: responsibilities, stable presence, and generativity. Within these categories, participants focused on their role as disciplinarian and providers; still, Latino fathers yearned for more time to “be there” with their children. Findings also revealed evidence of strong values to connect, guide, and focus on the needs of their children. Contrary to historical descriptions of Latino fathers as being “machistas”, such findings, in part, shed light on the paternal strengths, cultural complexities, and social context experienced by Latino fathers in the U.S.
