A Longitudinal Investigation of Multicultural Competence in Counselor Education

Abstract

The present longitudinal, quasi-experimental study aimed to examine changes in multicultural competence and counselor self-efficacy among counselors-in-training (N = 104). This study used a nonrandomized, untreated control group with pretest and posttest design to compare levels of multicultural competence and counselor self-efficacy across two time points after controlling for age. Findings revealed significant improvements in multicultural competence and counselor self-efficacy across time after controlling for age, with students who reported higher levels of family income showing the most change in multicultural competence.
