This study explored the relationship between in-the-moment reading motivation and comprehension during reading for students enrolled in a community college. Participants completed two reading assessments, one of overall understanding during reading and one of comprehension strategy use during reading, both of which involved answering questions while reading. Immediately after each assessment, participants completed a survey designed to assess various aspects of motivation during reading. Comprehension was measured by the Reading Strategy Assessment Tool, and motivation surveys were adapted from experience sampling measures. Correlation analyses revealed that some aspects of motivation were positively correlated with understanding and inferential strategy use, and suggest that perceptions of the reading task may be particularly relevant to in-the-moment comprehension and strategy measures.
