Beyond Teaching, Research, and Service: Countering the Effects of Isolation and Marginalization in the Academy

Sun, April 30, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Grand Hyatt San Antonio, Floor: Third Floor, Bonham D

Abstract

In an attempt to address issues of isolation and marginalization, Black Female academics can create community on the margins. To that end, this case study illustrates how my role as Professor-in-Residence at West, a local Black High School, helped me locate my teaching, research and service within a school where I found community. I employ Black Feminist Theory in order to examine my work with Black educators, students, and parents as social, political, and educational activism. In addition, this research illustrates the possibilities of the professor-in-residence model, where teacher educators can teach, research, and provide services in ways that (a) promote community, (b) improve one’s own practice, (c) and transform learning experiences for preservice teachers, current practitioners, and students.
