The Eyes Have It: Examining a Physiological Measure of Cognitive Load

Abstract

Cognitive load theory has received a great deal of research attention in the last couple of decades. Somewhat less attention has been given to how researchers can most accurately measure cognitive load. This study utilizes a physiologically based metric, known as the Index of Cognitive Activity (ICA), that calculates mental workload based on eye-tracking measurements. Results indicate that the ICA correlates with one of the commonly used self-rating measures of cognitive load.
