An instrumental case study was conducted at a large, public research university to understand undergraduate use of learning dashboards. Forty undergraduate students participated in focus groups and observations. Scenario-based questions, modeled on current learning analytics-informed dashboards, were asked to understand student uses, perceptions and reactions to dashboard data visualizations and associated interventions. Preliminary results indicate that students value accurate and integrated data, as important for their self-assessment; require context, in addition to visualization, as a means for better sensemaking of data; and consider trust with faculty as core to their interest and use of dashboards and their data.
