Abstract

Many refugee children have endured traumatic experiences due to the exposure to violence and torture from war, displacement from their homes and families, and life in refugee camps. As they are relocated in the United States, the psychological, cultural, social, economic, and educational challenges are evident. However, in the midst of unprecedented odds in the lives of most refugee students, there are those who defy the odds to succeed academically and position themselves for a better future. For the purpose of this study we examine students who have defied odds, have graduated high school, and are planning on attending or are already attending college. Part of their success is attributed to protective factors at home, school, and community.
