Intersecting Identities: An Examination of How In-School Supports Benefit LGBTQ Youth of Color

Sun, April 30, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Grand Hyatt San Antonio, Floor: Third Floor, Bonham B

Abstract

Although research regarding the educational experiences of LGBTQ youth has increased over the last two decades, the specific experiences and needs of LGBTQ students of color remain largely unexplored. The limited research that does exist suggests that LGBTQ youth of color are at a higher risk for experiencing a hostile school climate. However, research documenting the role of LGBT-related school supports (e.g. Gay-Straight Alliances, inclusive curriculum) in improving school climate for LGBTQ youth has not examined whether these benefits extend specifically to youth of color. This study explores the extent to which Asian/South Asian/Pacific Islander, Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino/a, and Multiracial students experience the same potential benefits of LGBT-related in-school resources as their White LGBTQ peers.
