Abstract

This two-year ethnographic study explored the pathways of educational opportunity created through a community-based, locally organized, parent and family educational program in a diverse working class neighborhood in the Northwest. La Comunidad, offered English as an additional language as well as GED readiness classes and bilingual educational support designed for participants to obtain individual educational goals in a culturally and linguistically affirming context. The analysis of program structures and practices focused ways educational opportunities were generated for participants. In this paper, I propose offering a culturally sustaining family education program positively impacted pathways of educational opportunities for students and their families.
