"I'm the Only Person of Color": Latinx School Board Members' Leadership Toward Equity

The purpose of this paper is to highlight the experiences and roles of Latinx school board members in addressing educational equity for English learners. Framed by a combination of critical theories, this paper emerges from a multiple-case study using interview data and other archival records from three school districts located in the understudied region of the U.S. Mountain West. Preliminary findings suggest that Latinx school board members are often the leading advocates in expanding educational opportunities for English learners. Yet, emerging themes point to several challenges such as structural limitations, school board politics, and voter discrimination in maintaining equity-focused leadership among Latinx school board members. This study also highlights serious issues of democracy and representation within educational leadership.
