A Systematic Mapping of the Negative Space in Educational Leadership Literature

Abstract

This qualitative study examines stated gaps across educational leadership scholarship with the purpose of determining ways that areas of non-knowledge can inform future research agendas. Researchers framed the study using the sociology of ignorance and methodologically employed systematic mapping to identify the scope, frequency, and depth of gaps (Grant & Booth, 2009). Using recent articles from Educational Administration Quarterly, the Journal of Research on Leadership Education, and two editions of the Handbooks of Research on the Education of School Leaders, researchers ascertained gaps as a way of identifying future priorities. Analyses of results from text queries and compound text queries indicate a diverse range of trends in literature that significantly inform the field.
