Standards and Poor: Evidence of Global Citizenship Orientation in Australian and U.S. Education Standards

Thu, April 27, 2:15 to 3:45pm, San Antonio Marriott Rivercenter, Floor: Third Floor, Conference Room 17

Abstract

We examined the extent to which education standards in Australia and the United States emphasized global citizenship. Triangulating results from qualitative coding, systematic counting, and critical discourse analysis of the Australian General Capabilities and the U.S. Common Core State Standards, we found both standard sets incorporated rhetoric that intimated global citizenship as national aims, but the nation-states infused the notion differently. Overall findings showed greater evidence of global citizenship articulation in the Australian standards, but our study highlighted opportunities for each nation’s policymakers and practitioners to work within the boundaries of their standard sets to empower K-12 stakeholders to democratize student opportunity to experience an education that esteems global citizenship.
