This comparative multiple case study examined the influence membership in a Black Greek Letter Fraternity (BGLF) has on the involvement, engagement, and persistence of the African American male student’s success attending a Predominantly White Institution (PWI) and a Historically Black College or University (HBCU). While there is research on the impact of Greek Letter Organization membership on college student engagement and success, the focus is primarily on the experiences of White students, with mixed results. The findings in these studies include lower moral and cognitive development, less concern for social issues than their non-Greek counterparts, extremely high levels of alcohol use and abuse, and increased incidences of rape and sexual assault in fraternity houses
