Abstract

Community colleges and Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) provide several linkages to the STEM pipeline and are key access points to postsecondary education for underrepresented students. College and career pathways are rarely straightforward, particularly in an age of higher education where students are increasingly mobilizing their education. Student mobility and transitions across institutions are key factors to consider in assessing STEM career trajectories and outcomes as STEM persistence and attainment are often examined isolated within the context of one institution. This study seeks to examine STEM career pathways for underrepresented students who began at community colleges, with a specific emphasis on student mobility across multiple institutions and investigating the specific role of institutional contexts.
