An Affect-Behavior-Cognition (ABC) Model of Multicultural Teaching Competence: Scale Development and Validation

Abstract

In the present research, we proposed and tested an ABC (Affect-Behavior-Cognition) model of MTC (multicultural teaching competence) to fill the gap of meager instrumentation in multicultural teacher education. This model is based on both NCATE diversity standards and multicultural education literature in preparing preservice teachers. The results from three studies provided initial support for the validity of Multicultural Teaching Inventory (MTI) derived from the proposed model. Exploratory factor analysis in Study 1 yielded a 3-factor structure: affect, behavior, and cognition. The 3-factor structure was cross-validated in Study 2 through confirmatory factor analysis. Results from Study 3 provided initial evidence for criterion-related validity. Conceptual and applied issues pertaining to the ABC model are discussed.
