Improving Opportunity and Access: Promoting Resilience in Teaching and Learning Using an Innovative Participatory Pedagogy

Mon, May 1, 8:15 to 9:45am, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 1

Abstract

Teacher professional development must enable teachers to manage complex and constantly changing practice environments. Teachers need to understand and facilitate those processes which allow all learners to have equal educational opportunities in learning; a key component of this is resilience as an essential part of pedagogy. A multiple-sequential case study was employed to explore the impact of an inclusive participatory pedagogy (PLSP) focused on resilience to support early career teacher (ERC) development. Thematic analysis of teacher-focused questions and reflective portfolios identified confidence, competence, and control as key themes associated with the resilience program. Explicit provision and demonstration of cognitive tools to support critical reflection; authentic focused assessment feedback, and an emphasis on relationship building are essential in supporting ERC development.
