While extensive research has documented the positive outcomes of students engaged in action-research, there is little discussion of the mediation of learning that happens in these projects. In this qualitative case study of learning within Urban Freedom School, I build upon research linking close-text analysis to the formation of a critical social consciousness and document the ways in which critical, sociological analysis is mediated. In particular, I look at how a close text analysis of sociological and historical texts mediates the political formation of Raza youth engaged in action-research projects.
