Managing Seductive Details: A Skill and Disposition Approach

Abstract

Seductive details are interesting and unnecessary materials for comprehension of the main ideas. Research has substantial evidence that seductive details are deleterious to learning, called the seductive details effect. Although researchers have investigated extrinsic ways to mitigate the effect through design of learning materials or tools, few have investigated the role of intrinsic factors. We examine intrinsic factors of critical thinking dispositions (CTD) and conditional reasoning (CR) to manage the seductive details effect. A seductive details effect was not observed unless CR or CTD were considered as covariates. Further analyses examine the relationship between CTD, CR, and learning performance. These results suggest researchers need to continue to exploring the role of intrinsic traits in mitigating the seductive details effect.
