The Impact of Campus Racial Climate on Sense of Belonging for Students of Color

Abstract

This study explores perceptions of campus racial climate and sense of belonging for Students of Color at institutions of higher education by using data from the Higher Education Research Institute (HERI) to understand the differential impact of race/ethnicity, gender, and sexual orientation. Descriptive statistics revealed significant differences for sense of belonging and perceptions of a negative campus racial climate across race/ethnicity and sexual orientation, but not gender. After testing for interaction effects, results reveal a number of significant interactions across race/ethnicity, gender, and sexual orientation which will be reviewed in this paper.
