Effects of Model Types by Goal Structures and Perceived Ability Levels on the Perceived Similarity and Self-Efficacy of Observers

Abstract

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the different effects of perceived ability levels and modeling types on model-observer similarity in competence and self-efficacy in diverse learning situations. Two experiments were carried out. 168 college students participated in Experiment 1, and 116 college students participated in Experiment 2. The 2x2x2 (goal structures x perceived ability x types of models) factorial design was used for both experiments. Results of the two experiments showed that vicarious experience functions differently across learning situations. The study suggested that vicarious experience, namely modeling, was not effective for everyone in a competitive learning situation.
