Abstract

An understudied subject in graduate programs in the field of education across North America is that of student-run publications. While these publications have in many cases existed for decades, they have practically not been studied outside of a few select studies outside of education. Yet, these student-run publications arguably serve a variety of potentially important purposes in graduate education, preparing professional development for future faculty members by engaging them in activities that will later be part of their work as researchers. This exploratory, mixed-methods study provides a first description of graduate-student-run publications in North America, in particularly their characteristics and their potential benefits for graduate students. The results indicate a diverse group of publications with unique contexts and purposes.
