There are a number of factors that contribute to successful international communication. A combination of synchronous and asynchronous communication tools is needed to encourage and facilitate interactions between participants. The Canada and China Reciprocal Learning Project focuses on development of cultural knowledge and relationships. In this paper about the mathematics research subteam, we describe the communication tools employed to provide participants with the ability to communicate with each other across 12 time zones. Each reciprocal partnership teacher pair developed a different set of communication tools, indicating that it is challenging to select one set of tools that will satisfy all participants.
