Fear of Speaking in a Second Language and Instruction: Foreign Language Anxiety During Microteaching

Abstract

Oral performance in a second language in an evaluative environment can create anxiety and may elicit performance way below ones actual ability. In this study, it was questioned whether this situation was applicable to the micro-teaching performances of pre-service teachers who study at a Turkish university where the medium of instruction is English. Micro-teaching experiences involve both an assessment of performance and communicative skills. The second language speaking anxiety and test anxiety of pre-service teachers were assessed and their micro-teaching performance scores were obtained. The results showed the anticipated negative relationship between test anxiety, second language speaking anxiety and micro-teaching performances indicating the debilitating role of communicating in a second language adding to teacher stress.
