This paper presents findings from an exploratory study that investigates a national sample of six intentionally diverse charter organizations. Using qualitative research methods and supporting survey data, this study peers inside an emerging type of charter school that by design diversifies their student body. Data sources include over 30 interviews with charter leaders from 21 schools, observations, and archival research. The authors, first, describe the origins and unintended consequences of rapid charter school expansion (i.e. lacking innovation and increased racial and economic segregation); second, they look inside schools to examine the internal policies that promote integration, including school missions, recruitment of community members, classroom teaching strategies and community-building, and student discipline.
