The Development of the Scale of Contemplative Practice in Higher Education

Thu, April 27, 12:00 to 1:30pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: River Level, Room 6B

Abstract

Some scholars formed an expansive view of knowledge moving beyond the cognitive notion of intellect. Emotional intelligence theory posits that human intelligence encompasses cognitive and emotional competencies, providing a framework for contemplative practices in an endeavor to support an eclectic understanding of cognition. Contemplative practices may benefit graduate student disposition and potentially inform areas of educator preparation through the use of emotional adeptness. The purpose of this study was to develop a self-report measure and address issues of validity and reliability. Data collected from a review of the literature, reference to personal experiences, and consultation with an expert panel were used to generate items. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were conducted and resulted in a 30-item scale with strong reliabilities.
