This case study explores the lived experiences of four teachers of color. It reveals that teachers of color bring along the collective experiences of their lives and culture to define their perceptions and values of being a teacher. On the one hand, they see themselves as trust builders and advocators for their students; on the other hand, they do not feel a sense of belonging to the professional community in their schools. Their life experiences and insider knowledge from the community and the adversities they have encountered are important factors shaping their professional identities. This research provides data-grounded implications for school administrators, policy makers, and teacher education programs to better recruit, support, and retain teachers of color.
