Abstract

As the body not quite young enough to be “child” and not old enough to be “adult”, the social, political, discursive, material ideas and imaginings that constitute “youth” lie directly at the intersection of queer studies and education. What is the imaginary of youth and what are the material conditions of youth, particularly in relation to genders, sexualities and race? Drawing from an ethnography of a camp for queer and transgender youth and another project focusing on the mobility of urban trans, nonbinary and queer youth of color, it is productive to think about how knowledges are inhabited, raced and produced by imaginaries such as “good” youth, equality, risk and safety, revealing how “youth” as a category is employed.
