Learning analytics interventions are more common in higher education settings due to the availability of data about student outcomes from different educational technology systems. However, learning analytics interventions may appeal to students of higher-ability levels and therefore may only be used by that group of learners. For the present study, we designed a dashboard (Elements of Success) that provided learners with feedback about their performance in an introductory chemistry course. We found that women were more likely to access the dashboard, and that students with higher high school GPAs were also more likely to access the dashboard. Using propensity score matching to correct for these characteristics, we found a strong, positive association with using the dashboard and final course grades.
