The importance of preparing students to interpret data has been recognized across content standards and is a key skill in a scientifically literate population. However, there is much to be understood about creating opportunities for students to engage with multiple sources of data, and the processes through which students learn to think about data. In this paper, we report about groups of middle school students working collaboratively with multiple data sources on an app designed for multi-touch tables. Analysis of video and transcripts examined the amount of discussion related to data, and the preceding activities that led students to engage in data-focused discussions. Guidelines for the design of activities to engage students in discussion of multiple data sources are described.
