Ka'ina Hawai'i: Vocabulary Sequencing in the Hawaiian Language

Fri, April 28, 8:15 to 10:15am, Grand Hyatt San Antonio, Floor: Fourth Floor, Texas Ballroom Salon B

Abstract

The collocation of lexical items in Hawaiian is often sequence governed depending on the context of use. The idea of sequencing is not peculiar to Hawaiian but, as is the case for many languages, the particular sequencing is language specific. This investigation reveals an interesting understanding of how such sequencing is emblematic of Hawaiian ways of thinking. Before examining these collocations, however, it is important to establish that we will be speaking of temporal and spatial order as evidenced in both English and Hawaiian writing systems.
