Validation of the Sense of Purpose Inventory With Adults

Sat, April 29, 8:15 to 9:45am, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 1

Abstract

The Sense of Purpose Inventory (SOPI) is designed to measure perceptions of awareness of purpose, altruistic purpose, and awakening to purpose. The present study revised the awakening to purpose subscale and provided evidence of validity of the SOPI for the use with adults. The SOPI was validated with a sample of 177 working adults. Construct validity was established by confirming the three-factor structure of the SOPI. Criterion validity was evident based on significant positive correlations of subjective happiness and life satisfaction with awareness of purpose, altruistic purpose, and awakening to purpose. The subscales of the SOPI showed adequate internal consistency. The inventory is suggested as a reasonable measure of self-reported perceptions of adults related to the sense of purpose.
